Why I NEVER Answer This Question on the Internet
How This Innocent Question Can Reveal Your Location
Typical for you; Useful for A Stalker
It’s such an innocent question, a question that you would ask anyone over a beer, a dinner. It’s as traditional as “how’s the weather?” when it comes to conversation starters, but a stalker’s mind thinks differently. Asking someone where they’re from flat out is weird and can raise alarms, so I would disguise that question with this question
What’s Your Favorite Football Team?
Why would I ask this? I’ll tell ya! In-Group Favoritism and Social Identity Theory
Social Identity Theory: a theory that states that individuals derive a portion of their self-concept from their membership in social groups
In-Group Favoritism: the tendency to favor people who are part of one's own group over people who are part of other groups
These two psychological traits are very interesting, and it shows that people are more likely to favor the football team of their home state (own group)
According to a Realtor.com survey, 61% of NFL fans say it was important to them to support a local team, and 55% believe that supporting the same team gives them feel a sense of community and neighborhood.
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- About 1 in 5 NFL followers say their loyalty played an extremely significant or highly significant role in their home search process, and a majority (55%) say that supporting a local team helps them feel more connected to their community and neighborhood, according to new research from Realtor.com®.

What That Means for You?
It means most likely, you’re going to naturally and unconsciously pick the team of your home state when I ask “What team you rooting for?” or “What’s your favorite football team?”. If you say, “The BobCats”, I’m automatically going to think you’re from Ohio according to psychology, and that’s just another piece of the puzzle if it turns out that you really are from Ohio. It’s not a guarantee that that’s where you are now or where you’re from, but it’s a place to look, and it’s a high chance that you are.
Conclusion: How You Can Use This to Your Advantage
If you know you’re being stalked or someone is trying to find out where you live, you can use this to put out fake information (you all know how much I love fake information if you’ve read my other articles, which you should O.O). Post about your favorite football team on social media and make sure it’s a team from another state. The person will think “Ahh, so this person must be from here”, but you’re not.
Another reason I’ll never answer this question: I don’t watch football 😂.
